Understanding Developmental Disabilities

Developmental disabilities are a group of conditions that begin during a person’s developmental period and can affect physical abilities, learning, language, behavior, and daily functioning.

They can result from a variety of genetic, environmental, medical, and other factors, though the specific cause isn’t always known. Developmental disabilities are often lifelong, but their effects and the support a person needs may change over time.

A person with a developmental disability may experience differences in areas including:

  • Learning, reasoning, or processing information
  • Speech, language, or communication
  • Movement, coordination, or mobility
  • Social interaction or emotional regulation
  • Completing everyday tasks and routines
  • Building skills for greater independence

Developmental disabilities include many different conditions, and no single description applies to everyone. Each person has their own strengths, interests, and goals. Individualized, person-centered support can help people with developmental disabilities develop skills, participate in their community, and pursue meaningful lives.

How Redwood Supports the People We Serve

At Redwood, every journey begins with the individual, not a diagnosis or label. Through our person-centered approach, we work closely with individuals, families, caregivers, and support teams to understand each person's unique strengths, goals, preferences, and needs. Together, we create personalized support plans that promote independence, meaningful relationships, community connection, and overall wellbeing.

Our services may include residential and home-based supports, day and community programs, employment and vocational services, community integration, behavioral services, crisis support, and care coordination. Delivered by compassionate, highly trained teams, these services are designed to help individuals live fulfilling, self-directed lives while remaining connected to the people and communities that matter most.
