About
Pica is an eating disorder defined by repeatedly eating or swallowing items that aren’t considered food and don’t provide nutritional value.
Examples may include paper, clay, fabric, dirt, hair, paint chips, and other materials.
The behavior must be developmentally inappropriate and may occur in children, adults, people who are pregnant people, and people with intellectual or developmental disabilities.
Each person’s experience with pica is different, and the behavior may have several possible contributing factors. Because eating non-food items can lead to serious medical complications, understanding the individual’s needs and creating a safe, respectful environment are especially important. Person-centered support can help protect the person’s health while promoting dignity, stability, and quality of life.
Our specialty is supporting individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who experience pica. We use an interdisciplinary, person-centered approach that partners with medical providers, behavioral health professionals, dietitians, caregivers, and support teams to identify contributing factors, reduce health and safety risks, and teach safer replacement behaviors.
At Redwood, every journey begins with the individual, not a diagnosis or label. Through our person-centered approach, we work closely with individuals, families, caregivers, and support teams to understand each person's unique strengths, goals, preferences, and needs. Together, we create personalized support plans that promote independence, meaningful relationships, community connection, and overall wellbeing.
Our services may include residential and home-based supports, day and community programs, employment and vocational services, community integration, behavioral services, crisis support, and care coordination. Delivered by compassionate, highly trained teams, these services are designed to help individuals live fulfilling, self-directed lives while remaining connected to the people and communities that matter most.
