Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder

Autism spectrum disorder, or ASD, is a neurological and developmental condition that affects how a person experiences the world around them, including communication, interaction with others, learning, and processing sensory information.

Signs of ASD typically begin during early childhood, but some people may not receive a diagnosis until adolescence or adulthood. Autism is described as a spectrum because every person’s experience is different, including their strengths, characteristics, preferences, and support needs.

A person on the autism spectrum may experience differences in areas including:

  • Verbal and nonverbal communication
  • Social interaction and relationship-building
  • Sensory processing and responses to sounds, lights, textures, or other stimuli
  • Learning, attention, movement, or information processing
  • Routines, repetitive behaviors, or highly focused interests
  • Adjusting to changes or unfamiliar situations

How Redwood Supports the People We Serve

At Redwood, every journey begins with the individual, not a diagnosis or label. Through our person-centered approach, we work closely with individuals, families, caregivers, and support teams to understand each person's unique strengths, goals, preferences, and needs. Together, we create personalized support plans that promote independence, meaningful relationships, community connection, and overall wellbeing.

Our services may include residential and home-based supports, day and community programs, employment and vocational services, community integration, behavioral services, crisis support, and care coordination. Delivered by compassionate, highly trained teams, these services are designed to help individuals live fulfilling, self-directed lives while remaining connected to the people and communities that matter most.
