Trevor’s Story: Finding His Voice and Leading with Confidence

Trevor’s journey is a wonderful example of how confidence can grow when individuals are encouraged to explore their strengths and take on meaningful roles within their community.

Trevor began attending the On Angel Wings (OAW) Day Program, a member of Redwood Family Care Network, in 2013. In the beginning, he was a very quiet individual who preferred to stay within a small, familiar group. Trevor rarely spoke to others outside of his assigned group and tended to keep to himself during activities.

Over time, with encouragement from staff and the welcoming environment of the program, Trevor began to feel more comfortable engaging with others. Gradually, he started participating more in conversations and group activities. What began as small steps toward interaction eventually grew into something much larger. Trevor truly began to come out of his shell.

As his confidence grew, Trevor began taking on new opportunities to be involved in program events and activities. He stepped into roles requiring leadership and communication, including serving as the emcee for events such as the talent show and the family luncheon—moments that showcased his personality, humor, and ability to connect with others.

Trevor also began taking the lead in several group activities, demonstrating not only his growing confidence but also his willingness to support and encourage his peers.

One of Trevor’s most recent accomplishments has been taking on responsibility for the program’s “Café,” a small daily shop where participants can purchase drinks and snacks. Trevor plays a central role in running the café. He manages the purchasing list, helps shop for supplies with minimal assistance, stocks the cabinets and drink refrigerator, and opens the café each afternoon.

During café hours, Trevor assists his peers with their purchases and helps keep the space organized and welcoming. This role allows him to practice important skills such as organization, responsibility, money handling, and customer service, while also giving him a meaningful leadership role within the program.

Trevor’s growth from a quiet participant to a confident leader and peer supporter has been inspiring to those around him. His willingness to step forward, try new experiences, and take ownership of responsibilities reflects the incredible progress he has made over the years.
