RFCN Family: On Angel’s Wings Participates in AAC 101 Training
On June 20, 2023, Arizona Department of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) Community Engagement and OAW’s group home staff gathered for the “AAC 101” training, a program designed to help facilitate Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) during emergency situations. This initiative was requested by Zane Garcia Ramadan, the current Director of the DDD. He emphasized the critical necessity for this training to be provided to all licensed DDD Group Home staff to ensure optimal care and communication with individuals who have communication difficulties.
The AAC 101 training was a one-hour program that included an informative presentation and an interactive Q&A session. The comprehensive training covered several key areas. First, it focused on the identification and proper use of AAC devices, providing vital knowledge for those who might not be familiar with such tools. Furthermore, the training outlined best practices for communicating with those who experience communication challenges, offering practical advice and strategies to ensure effective and compassionate communication. It also touched on the legal considerations that come into play, further equipping the attendees with knowledge to navigate complex situations. The training provided specific suggestions for interacting with individuals who utilize AAC devices, especially under the high-stress, time-sensitive conditions that often accompany emergency situations. The aim was to enhance the responders’ capabilities to act swiftly, effectively, and empathetically, to ultimately improve the safety and well-being of those they serve.
