RFCN Family: On Angel’s Wings Participates in AAC 101 Training

On June 20, 2023, the Arizona Department of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) Community Engagement team joined On Angel’s Wings group home staff for the “AAC 101” training, a program designed to strengthen understanding and use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) during emergency situations.

This important initiative was started by Zane Garcia Ramadan, Director of the Arizona Division of Developmental Disabilities, who recognized the need for all licensed DDD group home staff to receive specialized training to better support individuals who experience communication challenges.

The AAC 101 training consisted of a one-hour educational session that included both a presentation and interactive Q&A discussion. Participants learned how to identify and properly use AAC devices, along with practical strategies for communicating effectively with individuals who rely on alternative forms of communication. The training also covered important legal considerations and provided guidance for responding to emergency situations in ways that are respectful, compassionate, and person-centered.

A key focus of the program was helping caregivers and support professionals feel confident interacting with individuals who use AAC devices during high-stress or time-sensitive situations. By increasing awareness and understanding, the training helps ensure that communication remains accessible and effective when it matters most.
